JOHANNESBURG-It was Black Wednesday for Johannesburg motorists after the Grayston temporary bridge collapsed along M1 road yesterday. Two people died and 21 were injured.
The Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS), Robert Mulaudzi told Joburg Central Times, “we managed to remove all the structure of the bridge which was inside the road and put it outside the road. I confirm that at any time the road will be ready to be used again especially around 1pm. For now we would like to advice the motorists to use other roads and that one can be used later after pick hours”.
“Family members of those who died and injured are all informed about the incident; and the City Mayor Mpho Parks Tau even went to the hospitals to visit those who are injured. Five people are critically injured and all in all are 21. I can confirm that 2 people died so far” he added.
Asked if the State or Murray & Roberts Holdings engineering Company will be responsible for the people who died and hospitalized, Mulaudzi said, “I can’t make any comment on this because the matter is still under investigation.
“I can’t comment on the matter of construction, because I am not an engineer but I hope that Murray & Roberts Holdings can make a comment on that”.
“Murray and Roberts has got a contract to build a pedestrian bridge over the highway,” its spokesperson Ed Jardim said on Wednesday. “What has collapsed is the temporary formwork.”
The temporary bridge collapsed at around 3:40pm on Wednesday afternoon. Traffic was badly affected on both sides of the road.
Murray and Roberts Holdings engineering is SA’s second largest construction company.
